Dreams for a Great School Year!

We're off to another school year!!!.....sort of!  I am starting out the school year at home with my beautiful new son Rex who was born in July!  Miss Coe is starting out the school year subbing for me at Suffield, and I will be back at Brimfield on October 8.  In this post I am sharing the work the third graders at Suffield made at the end of last year to kick off this year's back to school season.
My wonderful friend Kali from my Master's program at the Maryland Institute College of Art inspired this lesson based on the book Oliver Who Would Not Sleep by Mara Bergman and Nick Maland.  After reading the book, we discussed dreams or goals that we wanted to make for ourselves for the upcoming school year.  The students then did a little writing (I love having the kids write about their ideas!) about their goals until they got it just right.  We drew self-portraits in a simple cartoon style, and then we cut them out and made really big (most students had to glue two pieces of 18" x 24" construction paper together as a base.) collages with our thought bubbles and fabric for our quilts.

The artworks were so big that many students had to move to the floor!

I am so grateful to be spending time at home with my baby, but I miss all of my "other" kids and look forward to seeing them soon!
